Raise your hand if you think cover letters are pointless. I did and maybe I still do but that doesn't change the fact that I still need one. For the fist time in my life I'm job hunting as a creative. When I set out to find work as a desinger I already had someone in mind that I wanted to work for.
The problem was that they didn't have any openings posted. This meant I needed to create a cold cover letter and resume. While browsing on Google I found Youth Central. Under Jobs they have some very helpful tips for cover letters. Specifically about how to write a cover letter when there's no job advertised. They explain the purpose of a cover letter and will walk you through step by step in creating one. Here is my cover letter and resume I put together for The Bible Project. Hopefully Youth Central proves to be as helpful to you as it was for me.
